All Life Needs a Home: Speak Up to Protect Wildlife Habitats

Biologist E.O. Wilson warned that “when we destroy habitat, we destroy ourselves.” For Montana’s Canada lynx, that truth is life or death. Lynx depend on wild, snowy forests to hunt hares and raise their young. Without the Endangered Species Act, they may not be here today.

But now, the Trump administration is attempting to gut the ESA’s core protections. A new rule would change the definition of “harm” to exclude habitat destruction. In other words, destroying an animal’s forest, meadow, or wetland home would no longer count as harming the animal under the law.

Why This Matters

  • Canada Lynx – Need thick, snowy forest to hunt. Without it, they vanish.
  • Northern Spotted Owl – Relies on old-growth trees. Remove them, and the owl disappears.
  • Florida Manatee – Dependent on warm springs and seagrass. Development and pollution destroy both.
  • Monarch Butterfly – Lays eggs only on milkweed. No milkweed, no monarchs.

What’s at Stake

This proposal gives a free pass to loggers, drillers, and real estate developers to destroy critical habitat. If passed, it would be one of the most harmful environmental rollbacks in decades. It erases years of legal precedent and puts countless species in immediate danger of extinction.

Our Duty

The Endangered Species Act is one of the most successful conservation laws in history. It embodies our shared commitment to protect the natural world for future generations. Habitat is life. Without it, we lose the wild creatures that make our world whole.
