We, like many in our community, are fed up with public lands that are great for recreating being controlled by trappers. We must reclaim our public lands! In Missoula, we have some of the best recreational opportunities of any community in America, yet these opportunities come with risk- traps! What many people do not realize is that trapping and the use of snares is allowed along the river and in many areas that people enjoy hiking, birding, and mountain biking or skiing, often with their companion animal. This is a major safety concern! In and around Missoula, these are places we would like to see trap-free that currently allow some form of trapping, either on land with some setbacks or in the river with no setbacks.
People continue to say to us-“it’s my wildlife too”, since when are trappers who pay only $28.00 a year to trap, have the right to destroy beavers, otters, pine marten and other species that one could find in the lands we are looking to “REWILD”. Biodiversity and healthy wildlife populations that include wolves and other predators are vital to the health and viability of our public lands. Trapping destroys all of that and leaves us in the urban interface with rivers and lands devoid of the animals that would enhance our experiences. They also are putting children and family pets at risk. These traps must be removed. If we can do this in Missoula, we can do it in your community! |
Help us make this a reality! Here’s how you can help:
