Fighting Against
Deadly M-44s
Footloose Montana is starting a new and important campaign. We are fighting to end the use of M-44’s in Montana. These “landmines” on our lands are designed to kill predators, but they have also killed family pets and people. These are dangerous devices that are triggered and spray cyanide poison into the air when touched. In 2015, a young boy in Idaho was injured and his dog killed, when one of these devices was placed on a hill behind his home. Idaho has now banned the use of M-44’s because of tremendous pressure placed on Wildlife Services that is responsible for the placement of most, but not all of these devices.
OUR CAMPAIGN GOALS
• End the use of M-44’s in Montana;
• Educate the public;
• Work with coalitions that will fight the continued use of these “landmines”;
• To pressure Wildlife Services in Montana and regionally to stop the use of M-44’s;
• To ensure the safety of people and pets while recreating in Montana.
Like the issue of trapping, we are committed to create a safe and welcoming environment for people, pets and wildlife on our public lands in Montana!
The first and best way to impact M-44s use is Public Comments:
Write and/or Call the Montana Office of Wildlife Services
We are asking that you contact Wildlife Services with letters and calls and make clear these poisonous “landmines” must be removed from Montana's landscapes once and for all.
Here are the points you want to communicate. Please tell State Director John Steuber to stop M-44’s and don’t listen to his efforts to downplay them:
— We must respect predators and stop the endless killing of species that only enhance our environment.
— Wildlife belongs to all of us, we have a voice in protecting them and our public lands!
— In 2018 Wildlife Service killed more than 2.6 million animals, 1.5 million of which were native species.
— M-44’s are slaughtering coyotes, wolves, hawks, eagles and even bears. Why is this allowed in 2019?
